6 English conversation books: choose by level and practise speaking
Published

For an adult who can read Japanese explanations, we would start with 音読×英文法 基本文型編 when basic sentence structure is uncertain, or the audio-download revised どんどん話すための瞬間英作文トレーニング when familiar sentences will not come out aloud. If you already form simple sentences, choose situational phrases, personal questions or pronunciation practice for the task that currently stops you. Use a book by listening, following the audio, writing one sentence about your life and saying it without looking.
These six books use Japanese explanations. If you cannot read Japanese comfortably, apply the selection method to a book explained in your strongest language. Recommendations are based on official publisher descriptions, contents and available samples, not on reading or testing the books. Checked 2026-10-15. The six purposes are covered by five publishers, with no more than two books from one publisher. Original Japanese titles identify the exact editions; the order is not a ranking.
Compare six books by the task you want to practise

| [音声DL付改訂版]どんどん話すための瞬間英作文トレーニング | Beret | Official: junior-high years 1–3 patterns | Build familiar sentences aloud | Book code → MP3 ZIP download | About 2 pages per pattern in contents | 2026-10-15 |

| 英会話が驚くほど上達する 自分を表現するためのQ&A 50 [音声DL付] | Beret | No numerical level stated; editorial fit: prepare personal answers | Talk about yourself | Book code → MP3 ZIP download | 50 questions; early entries about 4 pages | 2026-10-15 |
| 改訂3版 英語耳 発音ができるとリスニングができる | KADOKAWA | No numerical level stated; editorial fit: investigate sounds | Pronunciation | Paper edition: CD Extra; download also available | One Practice; minutes not specified | 2026-10-15 |
Audio access differs: NHK Publishing uses the book’s passcode and official download instructions. The two Beret books use a book code to download and unzip MP3 files. Gakken includes a CD; we did not establish a download method. IBC’s audio guidance says to type the book’s URL into the browser address bar. For 英語耳, follow KADOKAWA’s third-edition guidance. Check your edition and playback equipment; do not share purchaser-only codes, URLs or book audio. Page estimates are contents-based, not promised lesson times.
Start where your practice breaks down
Try describing one usual action. If you cannot explain how the sentence fits together, choose a basic-pattern book. If the answer makes sense but you struggle to produce it, choose oral sentence-building practice. You do not need a new exam score to make this decision, and an unstated publisher level should not be converted into an invented CEFR band.
If sentences already come out, choose one upcoming situation: explaining a routine, giving a plan or answering a question about yourself. Personal Q&A helps you decide what to say; chunks give you manageable word groups. A pronunciation book supports a sound problem—it does not choose your conversation topic for you.
Basic patterns: 音読×英文法 基本文型編
Suits: adults revisiting word order and basic sentence patterns after studying grammar. 音声DL BOOK 話すための基礎が身につく音読×英文法 基本文型編 — 大西泰斗・ポール・マクベイ · NHK出版 · 2023-08-10 · ISBN 9784142133734. The official description combines grammar review with reading aloud: five sentences per lesson. Contents cover basic patterns, their expansion, questions and a final test. No numerical proficiency threshold is stated. This is the currently listed basic-pattern volume; tense/modal and relative/subjunctive volumes are different content, not replacement editions. Audio downloads use the book’s passcode.
Our judgement, based on official description and contents: a clearly bounded five-sentence task can connect explanation to speaking. Use it: listen to a short item, imitate it, then write and say I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed. without looking. This is our original example, not a book sentence. Return to the explanation if word order is unclear. Caution: the advertised ten minutes per day is not timing or a learning outcome we verified. Reduce the task to one sentence if needed; this is not a verified complete introduction for someone encountering English for the first time.
Oral sentence building: どんどん話すための瞬間英作文トレーニング
Suits: people who understand simple written answers but cannot produce them promptly. [音声DL付改訂版]どんどん話すための瞬間英作文トレーニング — 森沢洋介 · Beret · 2026-01-21 · ISBN 9784860648138. The publisher describes a 2026 audio-download revision of the earlier title, with patterns grouped into junior-high years 1–3 and Japanese-to-English oral production.
Our judgement, based on official information: choose it to practise producing known forms, rather than rereading all your grammar. Use it: follow the book’s instructions for a pattern, then start from your own bedtime situation and say our original routine sentence. Caution: solving a book exercise is not the whole of an unpredictable conversation. We select the current download revision, not the superseded CD edition.
Situational phrases: 絵で見てパッと言う英会話トレーニング 海外旅行編 新装版
Suits: travellers who can picture a situation but cannot find the words. 絵で見てパッと言う英会話トレーニング 海外旅行編 新装版 CDつき — Nobu Yamada / Kajio · Gakken · 2023-09-07 · ISBN 9784053057907. Nobu Yamada is the author and Kajio the illustrator. The publisher describes first-person illustrations as prompts for constructing simple sentences. Contents include aircraft, airports, hotels, restaurants and shopping. We select the currently listed new-format travel edition, distinct from the basic volume. No numerical level or fixed lesson size is stated; the paper book includes a CD.
Our judgement, based on official description and contents: choose it for a specific upcoming travel situation rather than as a dictionary of all daily conversation. Use it: practise the book’s scene with its matching audio, then change the person and purpose. Our original hotel question is Where can I stretch for a few minutes? Hide the text and say it from the imagined situation the next day. This is not attributed to the book. Caution: travel coverage does not cover every meeting or casual conversation. A download method was not confirmed on the official page; if you cannot play CDs, choose a resource with confirmed audio access that suits your equipment.
Word groups: チャンクで覚える英語表現[新装版]
Suits: learners who understand basic sentences but build speech one word at a time. チャンクで覚える英語表現[新装版] — オ・ヨンイル · IBCパブリッシング · 2024-08 · ISBN 9784794608352. The publisher gives August 2024, not an exact publication day. Its current new-format edition organises chunks into opening, core and modifying parts; the official sample explains their roles. No numerical target level or fixed lesson size is stated. Audio is a free download reached through the URL printed in the book, entered directly in the browser address bar.
Our judgement, based on official description and sample: use it to think about how meaningful groups fit together, rather than collecting expressions. Use it: after matching audio practice, divide our original I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed. by meaning: action, duration and time. We do not claim those groups are entries in this book. Caution: mechanically joining three parts does not guarantee every sentence is correct or natural. Check word order and the words a verb requires; keep the purchaser-only URL private.
Personal answers: 自分を表現するためのQ&A 50
Suits: learners whose self-introduction ends before they can discuss their own experiences. 英会話が驚くほど上達する 自分を表現するためのQ&A 50 [音声DL付] — 富岡恵 · Beret · 2024-12-18 · ISBN 9784860647810. The official description has 50 personal questions and sample-answer templates for making your own answer. Contents pair questions with grammar hints and expression alternatives; early questions are roughly four pages apart.
Our judgement, based on official information: choose this when deciding what to say is the main obstacle. Use it: name one true routine in your strongest language, write our example only if it reflects your life, and say it with the text hidden. Caution: filling writing space is preparation, not completed speaking practice. Keep a short version you can explain rather than pretending to be the person in a sample answer.
Sounds: 改訂3版 英語耳
Suits: learners who know what they want to say but need to revisit consonants or vowels. 改訂3版 英語耳 発音ができるとリスニングができる — 松澤喜好 · KADOKAWA · 2021-04-26 · ISBN 9784041112595. KADOKAWA identifies this exact title’s updated third edition. Chapters 2–5 contain pronunciation practice; later chapters discuss authentic English and reading. The paper edition’s CD Extra can play as an audio CD and provides MP3 data; download is also available.
Our judgement, based on official information: use it alongside your conversation material for a specific sound problem. Use it: practise one item according to its explanation and audio, then return to I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed. as your own message. Caution: related titles such as the short-course or song drill are different books, not automatically a newer edition of this title. The book’s title is not evidence of a guaranteed learning outcome.
Turn any suitable book into speaking practice
- Listen and confirm the meaning. Match a short text to its actual audio. If you cannot explain what it means after checking the explanation, choose an easier item.
- Follow the model. Try speaking a little behind the audio. If shadowing is too difficult, pause and imitate one sentence at a time. Read the book’s own exercise instructions as well.
- Write one sentence for your life. Use the pattern’s job, not a copied textbook line. Our worked example is I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed. It gives a usual action, its duration and its time. Changing one word is not always grammatically sufficient; check the words required after the new verb.
- Hide the text and say it. Imagine explaining your bedtime routine to a colleague. If you get stuck, look, check and hide it again. Recognising the answer and producing it are separate tasks.
Save your own sentence in SpeakGain, then listen and say it
After using the book’s explanations and audio for a pattern, SpeakGain can be a place to return to a sentence you wrote. We entered I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed. manually through the normal Add screen and created one card. The sentence is our original example; the card does not contain a book’s text or audio.
On the device, Card library → Knowledge → Learn this card opened Listening with the written sentence hidden and audio playing. The screen prompted us to say what we heard aloud. Reveal answer showed the saved sentence and explanation on Answer, where we also operated replay. The verified use is listening to your own sentence, saying it and returning to its displayed text.
The screen’s Native audio label refers here to Viking AI-generated audio, not a human native-speaker recording. The interface and generated explanation are in English. All article languages share this same English sentence and audio.
Viking audio for our original sentence
I usually stretch for a few minutes before bed.
AI-generated audio, not book audio or a human native-speaker recording.
A manageable daily plan—and methods we would avoid
For a first week, we would keep one book and adjust the unit. A possible ten-minute session starts by saying yesterday’s sentence from its situation, then listening to a short new item, following it and writing/saying one personal sentence. Ten minutes is an editorial planning example, not a publisher’s claim or a deadline for fluency. A whole lesson need not fit into one session.
We do not recommend silent reading without audio as the main conversation routine: it leaves the listening and speaking task undone. We also avoid buying several books and repeatedly abandoning their first lessons: each new book restarts setup and method selection. Identify whether you stopped because the unit was too long, explanations were unclear or topics were irrelevant. Reduce the unit, review a basic explanation or change the purpose accordingly.
For stories, see beginner reader choices; for choosing reading-aloud material across books and other sources, see reading-aloud materials. Oral-production technique is covered in oral sentence-building practice, with phone options in sentence-building apps. Use pronunciation apps for pronunciation tools and sentence memorisation for returning to a sentence after the first session.
Questions about choosing and using a book
How many should a beginner buy? Start with one main book. Add a supplement only after a distinct need becomes clear.
Is a phrasebook or grammar book first? If sentence structure is unclear, start with basic explanation. If you understand it and have a situation, use a phrasebook. You need not finish all grammar before speaking.
Can I use a book without audio? It may help with meaning or grammar, but we would choose matching audio for a first speaking resource so you have a model to revisit.
How many passes are enough? There is no universal number. Check whether you can say a short sentence from its situation without seeing it, not just recognise the printed answer.
Book or app? A book can supply structure and explanations. An app can be a place to return to a sentence you wrote. Decide the task first.
Does an older publication date mean an obsolete book? No. Check the exact title’s edition and current official audio guidance; related series titles are not interchangeable editions.
Our final choice
For uncertain basic patterns, start with 音読×英文法 基本文型編; for understood forms that will not come out, use the revised oral-composition book. Choose the Gakken travel volume when a trip is coming and you can play its CD, or Q&A when deciding what to say about yourself is the obstacle. Chunks and pronunciation are supporting choices. Choose one suitable book, imitate a short item, write your own sentence and end by saying it without looking.
